The Portsmouth Harbor Inn and Spa is a classic New England bed and breakfast. Located in Kittery, Maine, within sight and walking distance of historic downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, across the Piscataqua River, it is a unique Victorian bed and breakfast with 5 bedrooms and a day spa in the attached converted barn.
Opened in the late 1980’s as a bed-and-breakfast, the Inn has had several “lives” – first, finished in 1879, as a private home, then, during WWII, as housing for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard workers, and then as a private residence again until bought and rehabilitated by George and Cevia Rosol. Lynn and her late husband Nathaniel Bowditch purchased the B&B in 2004. The main house is traditional brick with a comfortable front porch; both the Inn and the Spa offer spectacular views of the working harbor that includes the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the world famous icons of the Portsmouth Tug Boats. Since purchasing the Inn, Lynn and Nat have redecorated the interior and created a beautiful shade garden on the north side of the house; in that time, opportunities for interesting and varied activities in the Seacoast area have significantly expanded beyond the beaches and shopping.
The Seacoast has become a mecca for foodies, as well as travelers seeking anything from a quiet weekend away, to new parents taking a short break, to avid shoppers, history buffs, cyclers, kayakers, hikers. Stay connected (free Wi-fi throughout the Inn, including the front porch and the gardens), or unplug, have a cup of tea and a cookie (or two), or a glass of sherry, and read a good book in an overstuffed chair on the first or second floor, or in your room - the Inn has an excellent supply of books and magazines, and there are terrific bookstores within a short walk over the river.
The Piscataqua River separating Maine and New Hampshire is practically the definition of a working waterfront, with tugboats, tankers, fishing boats, and pleasure yachts all battling the strong currents that rip through four times a day – the local tide is around 13 feet, and the Piscataqua is the second fastest flowing deep water river in the world. The bridge was reopened in 2013, the ribbon cut by former Portsmouth mayor Eileen Foley, who cut the ribbon when the original bridge was opened in 1923 when she was 5 years old!
